A distinctive vintage Hawaiian ring by Maui Divers, featuring two substantial Hawaiian black coral cabochons in an organic 14K yellow gold mounting inspired by the branching form of deep-sea coral.
The ring showcases two approximately 13 × 11 mm oval black coral cabochons, each displaying the lustrous deep-black polish for which Hawaiian black coral is prized. Under close examination, the coral reveals beautiful concentric growth striations, with subtle warm brown to orange-brown bands that follow the natural growth of the material.
The coral is embraced by an intricately sculpted coral-branch-style gold mounting, creating an unusually organic composition in which the precious metal appears to grow around and between the two cabochons. The openwork design gives the substantial ring an airy quality despite its impressive presence.
The design is particularly significant in the history of Maui Divers Jewelry. The company began as a diving operation in Maui and discovered Hawaiian black coral in 1958, subsequently beginning to design and manufacture Hawaiian black coral jewelry in 1959.
