Finely carved and full of character, this vintage carved hardwood compartment box features multiple detailed rabbit carvings, hidden storage compartments, and an ingenious corded construction that combines functionality with sculptural artistry.
The box is carved on both sides in the form of a rabbit, one reclining and one crouched. The rabbit's body separates into multiple individual compartments. Each section remains connected by a corded assembly, allowing the compartments to be opened while remaining securely joined. The cord terminates in a separately fully-carved rabbit-form toggle and decorative carved bead, while a vibrant red tassel provides an attractive finishing touch.
Both rabbits are fitted with warm amber-colored inset eyes that catch and reflect light, lending an expressive and lifelike quality to the carvings. A small inset maker's seal or signature plaque is present on one section, adding an additional element of craftsmanship and authenticity.
